Mata Nui is a character in the Bionicle series . He was also known as the Great Spirit ; for he was indeed one of the most powerful beings of all times . Mata Nui was a source of all those he considered good and was also responsible for creating the Three Virtues : Unity , Duty and Destiny . He was also a biological brother of Makuta Teridax , the leader of the Brotherhood of Makuta and the main villain of the Bionicle series . He have several forms : his Spirit Robot form , his warrior form , Toa form and his essence form that enables him to flow anyway he wants . When in his warrior form and Toa form , Mata Nui wore his signature mask Kanohi Ignika , the Mask of Life .
Over 100,000 years ago before the arrival of the Toa Mata , the Great Spirit Mata Nui was created by the powerful beings called the Great Beings . They also placed his spirit into the Spirit Robot and also forged the Kanohi Ignika , the Mask of Life for Mata Nui to used to create other beings .
As time progressed , The Great Beings requested Mata Nui to protect the Matoran alongside the other beings . After that , he descends to the Matoran Universe and transform into his warrior form to begin his quest .
Once he was in his warrior form , he then begins his quest which was given by the Great Beings . His first objective was to create the Three Virtues for the Toa and Matoran to understand the situation . Later after sometimes , Mata Nui met up with Makuta Teridax and thus , began their biological relationship as the two became allies as well as brothers . Later , Mata Nui also gathered many warriors from all over the universe as he chooses his handpicked allies and thus , he was a founder of his organization called the Order of Mata Nui . Their objective was managing the safety of the Matoran as well as Toa from their enemies .
A few years later , when the League of the Six Kingdoms led by Pridak , a former servant of the Brotherhood of Makuta as they attempt to overthrow the Great Beings , Mata Nui and the Order of Mata Nui were ordered to allied themselves with the alliance of the Brotherhood of Makuta as well as the band of Toa to stop the rebellion . He also managed to easily defeat the Kanohi Dragon and also prevented Teridax from killing Pridak . This event also responsible for causing Teridax to be consumed with ambition and greed as he slowly fall from grace , thus turning Teridax into a power-hungry tyrant .
As times passed by , Mata Nui was still on his quest . Upon learning that Teridax became the dark being , he decides to find out the cause . When Teridax and the Brotherhood of Makuta invade the place called Artakha and they attempt to steal the Kanohi Avohkii , the Mask of Light , Mata Nui and his allies arrive to the scene , There , he fought against his former ally and he urged Teridax to return to the light . However , Teridax told Mata Nui that he wants more power and he eventually defeated him and as the result , Mata Nui was heavily wounded by him as he was left to die as Teridax and his force of darkness departed with the Avohkii . With Mata Nui defeated , his allies began to scatter across the Matoran Universe for a time being .
However , Mata Nui was not destined to die yet . Instead , he transforms himself into his essence and he scattered his essence all over the Matoran Universe , hoping to bring hope and destiny to the Toa , Matoran and the rest of the other beings as he one day gave his power to them to defeat Teridax and the Brotherhood of Makuta . When Teridax learned about Mata Nui's survival , he decides to keep his brother in bay so that he can continue his plan . With this , he decided to infiltrate Metru Nui , the City of Legends and he captured Turaga Dume before impersonating him to take control of the city .
Sometimes later , the spirit of Mata Nui urged Toa Lhikan , the Toa of Fire as well as the leader of the first Toa team to gather the new six Toa called the Toa Metru to save Metru Nui from Teridax's control .
However , the plan did know worked well as Teridax ; after revealing his true motive , declared that he will put Mata Nui into endless slumber , Teridax then create the Great Cataclysm , which causing the devastating effect on Mata Nui as he felled into his comatose . Fortunately , the Toa Metru as well as Toa Lhikan who is now a Turaga , transported tha Matoran to the island of Mata Nui , an island named after him .
Upon their arrival on Mata Nui , the Toa Metru sacrificed their powers to reawaken the Matoran and thus , they transformed into Turaga . A few years later , the Toa Mata arrive into the Matoran Universe to awaken Mata Nui and to defeat Teridax once and for all .
Sometimes later after the Toa Mata (who were now known as Toa Nuva ) , Turaga , Matoran and the Rahi return to Metru Nui , they were greeted by Turaga Dume , the legendary Rahi Keetongu and the Rahaga who were now Toa Hagah . A few months later , Turaga Dume and the other Turaga eventually learned that Mata Nui was not sleeping but he was on the verge of dying . In a desperate moment , Turaga Dume ordered the Toa Nuva to journey to Voya Nui to get the Ignika in order to save Mata Nui's life .
When the Ta-Matoran called Jaller learned that from Nokama , he and his friends : Hahli , Kongu , Nuparu , Hewkii and Matoro decide to go to Voya Nui . Before getting to Voya Nui , Jaller and his friends were transformed by the Red Stars into the Toa Ignika . With their new-found powers , the Toa Ignika began their quest to free the Matoran of Voya Nui and defeat the gang of Skaldi rogues called the Piraka to retrieve the Ignika .
During the final battle between the Toa Ignika and the Kardas Dragon , an explosion occurred and caused the Mask of Life to fall into the strange ocean called Mahri Nui .
With the Ignika now sank into Mahri Nui , the Toa Ignika decide to go to Mahri Nui to finish their mission , Once inside , they were transformed into Toa Mahri , the water-breathing heroes as they were now forced to fight against the Barraki , a group of warlords who were bent on conquering the universe and were led by Pridak . When the Toa Mahri learnt from Defilak , a leader of the Mahri Nui Matoran that the only way to save Mata Nui's life was to access into the Cord , which was Mata Nui's heart and use the energy of the Ignika on it .
When Mata Nui eventually died at that time , several disasters began to ravage the Matoran Universe , causing devastation and destruction everywhere . However when Toa Matoro sacrificed his life to revive Mata Nui by placing the Ignika on himself and thus , releasing the energies to restore Mata Nui's life at the cost of his life . Mata Nui's life have been revived and the destruction halted as the Great Spirit now revived . But he was merely sleeping as there was a time that he shall be reawakened once more and this time ; will be done by the Toa Nuva ...
During the event in Bionicle 2008 storyline , the Brotherhood of Makuta led by Makuta Icarax , who was now a new leader invade Karda Nui and transform some of the Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran . With the Toa Nuva received the new armors from the being called Artakha , they used their new powers to stop the Brotherhood of Makuta invasion and to revive Mata Nui once more .
In the middle of this story , it was confirmed that the Ignika had washed ashore on the swamp of the island called Nynrah . Toa Tahu , Toa Gali and Toa Onua went to Nynrah and were ambushed by the three Makuta : Krika , Gorast and Bitil .
Sometimes later , the battle between the Toa Nuva , their allies and the Brotherhood of Makuta continue . When the Toa Nuva were in a pinch , the Ignika immediately transformed the unknown energy into the new warrior called Toa Ignika . He eventually defeated Gorast , Bitil , Chirox and Vamprah with ease and decided to join forces with the remaining Toa Nuva and their allies when Toa Kopaka was captured and brainwashed by the Brotherhood of Makuta .
Later as the story progressed , Toa Ignika eventually told the truth that he was in fact Mata Nui as he seeks to reclaim his original form by gaing access to the Codrex , who was said to contain his original power . Immediately , the heroes decide to infiltrate Destral , which was the fortess of the Brotherhood of Makuta to get Toa Ignika to the Codrex . There , they fought against the remaining forces of the Brotherhood of Makuta and freed Kopaka and the Av-Matoran from the corruption that the Brotherhood placed . Eventually , Toa Ignika fought with Icarax and Icarax was eventually destroyed by Ignika . Soon after that , Ignika sacrifices his life and his powers to reawaken his original form as the Toa Nuva and their allies escaped from Destral and the fortress of the Brotherhood of Makuta began to crumble . Toa Ignika was no more ... but Mata Nui's original form have returned and he was reawakened once more ...
Unknown to the Toa Nuva and the rest of the heroes , the event was also a part of Teridax's grand plan as when the Toa Nuva did the impossible , Teridax took his chance of infiltrate the Great Beings' place and used the virus to render all the Great Beings into coma before ushering his plan of universal conquest .
But hope have not lost yet . In the final battle in the Bionicle : Journey's End movie , Mata Nui makes his appearance in Tahu's trance state when Tahu and his Glatorian allies were having trouble fighting against Teridax , who have now regaining his final form . Then , Mata Nui gave the six Golden Armors to Tahu as they gave him his new form . With the help of the Golden Armors as well as his allies , Tahu eventually defeated Teridax and Teridax eventually perished in the final battle as the result . After that , Tahu uses the power of the Golden Armors to restore the universe and revive the Great Beings as well . Later , the Golden Armors reverted into the Kanohi Ignika as Mata Nui declared that his quest is finished and told Tahu and his allies to protect the universe no matter what the cost is . After finishing his words , Mata Nui transformed himself into a light as he slipped into the Mask of Life and the mask eventually turned into light as he departed for the Great Beings' place .
